COAST GUARDS at the US port of Los Angeles, USA launched an investigation how the 2,600- passenger Golden Princess liner came within feet of a fishing boat on Wednesday.

Associated Press reports the 31-foot-long fishing vessel "erratically" crossed within about 30 feet of the 109,000-ton vessel as it entered Los Angeles harbour Wednesday.

US federal law prohibits vessels from coming within 200 yards in front and 100 yards behind or to the sides of a cruise ship that is moving.

In a statement, Julie Benson, spokesperson for Princess Cruises told AP News: "We're grateful that the actions of the fishing boat didn't lead to a serious incident, and we fully support the efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard to enforce these important navigation rules."
