Spanish officals furious with Black Prince PDF Print E-mail

COUNCIL chiefs on the tiny Spanish island of La Gomera are furious with the owners of the BLACK PRINCE Fred Olsen, its claim today in some Tenerife newspapers.

Both Black Prince and the Balmoral were due to visit t0 the port of Valle Gran Rey during a recent sailing from Dover, UK.

Balmoral did arrive in December, but Black Prince docked at another smaller port, San Sebastian on the island. Owners Fred Olsen claimed the ship was so old that she could not steer herself safely into the port.

Local businesses and the regional council had forked out thousands of Euros on a craft and produce fair to welcome both ships into the recently refurbished port of Valle Gran Rey.

There was a day long fiesta for the visitors off both Black Prince and Balmoral with musicians booked, food prepared and school children all ready to perform only to be left disappointed, with little or no notice.

Spanish Official for tourism Councillor Ricardo Cabrera told local press: “No, it’s not coming, it can’t. It’s an old boat.”

The events had to be cancelled and stall holders left high and dry with the town wondering how a shipping firm, a port authority and town council all failed to notice the ship’s technical characteristics, until the day she was due to arrive and who will refund the money - is still to be answered.
