NONE of the 43 new cruise ships currently under construction to cope with the explosion in cruising can fit under Harbour Bridge in Sydney.
Sydney could lose millions of dollars down the gangplank because both its Harbour ports have not enough berths to cope with the demand, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.
Celebrity Millennium, at 91,000 tonnes, 11 passenger decks and 20 feet is just far too tall to fit under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the liner is an impressive sight. But on January 3rd 2009 she arrives in Sydney, her arrival in the Harbour will be spectacular. For the first time there are no berths available – so passengers face either a bus, taxi or long walk to the Sydney attractions.
In 2009 Carnival ships will land 108,000 cruise passengers alone. The world’s biggest cruise operator will make more than 50 port calls to Sydney.
60,000 passengers from other international operators will disembark in the city. $1 million is estimated to pour down the gangplank each day a ship is in port, and Sydney is due to see one ship a day in the Harbour in 2009.
