NORWEGIAN Cruise Line has warned the industry not to panic and rush to discount cruises. The firms UK General Manager, Stephen Park said: "There are some pretty crazy prices on offer". NCL claims that discounts were not stimulating demand and was confident the market would pick-up" Meanwhile, UK based cruise operator P&O's MD Nigel Esdale said: " A few years a go, our 45% off discount broke the mould. If we need to do something like that again - we will". Carnival's CEO David Dingle added: "We are going to have to do something eye-catching". NCL claim it was not going to get caught up in that. Mr Park added: "People do not want to spend, so it does not matter what you throw out there". In contrast Carnival has completed it's own research which shows that people will still book a cruise in 2009, but that they are holding offer to get the best deal on the high street or on-line". Will NCL have to perform a U-turn should the rest of industry follow P&O and Carnival's lead, we'll have to wait a see, but what is fact NCL cannot afford to take the high ground, whilst others discount!
