WE'RE all watching the pound in our pockets these days. The credit crunch is hurting us all. Many cruise-goers tell me they’re thinking of holidaying closer to home these days.
Lots are now driving to UK ports such as Dover or Southampton and cruising from there.  But, hundreds of you are jumping on low cost airlines for as little as £20 and jetting over to a European city to join a River Cruise.
The boom in river cruising is so strong countless firms are offering an alternative to the traditional cruise package holiday.
AVALON WATERWAYS: owned by the huge Globus group, who also own the UK package holiday firm Cosmos, are offering one of the youngest fleets on Europe's rivers.
They're offering eight ships of various sizes departing a number of European cities; some are a little further afield.
A number of the cruisers offer whirlpools in your cabin with some offering fitness centres onboard too. Avalon claim to offer some of the biggest staterooms in the industry.
PETER DEILMANN: probably one of the better know river cruise firms, it’s still family owned today – which is rare in this business – Offers eight river boats with some of the top onboard facilities such as; a cafe, library, shops, spa, indoor pool includes sauna with whirlpool – they even have a laundry.
SEA CLOUD CRUISES: this is luxury beyond belief, they have two cruisers River Cloud and River Cloud II. If you’re after a 5* float hotel, then believe me, you won’t be disappointed when you step onboard either of these ships. When you step onboard to champagne and fruit, you have a putting green, deck chess, hair salon, library, fitness centre, sauna, dinning is more casual and operates open seating .
VIKING RIVER CRUISES: launched in 1977, they started out with four cruisers. Today, it’s Europe’s biggest river firm with a total of 19 boats. Operates the longest boat on the river Rhine – all ships have a bar, satellite TV and internet access from the cabins. Shops and swimming pools and two restaurants – nearly all the excursions are included in your price.
